I believe you need to have a purpose in life. A purpose gives you a reason to exist, keeps you motivated and gives you something to base your life decisions on.
This is my purpose.
Everything I do is rooted in sport. From training to stay healthy, watching sport or understanding an athlete mindset to succeed in business.
Sport is not just a game. Sport is who I am. Why I am. What I am. Its every second on the clock. Every moment I live. Game day or in the office. I am a business athlete.
I want to leverage this to shift our culture and make a difference in South Africa through sport. My personal mantra that I try to live by everyday is ‘redefine normal’. Everyone’s normal is different and every day we wake up we have the power to change this… I want to change this using sport.
Nelson Mandela famously said:
Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.
Sport still plays an increasingly important role in more and more people’s lives, on and off the field of play, so we have the opportunity to leave a legacy. This legacy will be a country where the rules of the game are the same for everyone, and behaviour is guided by fair play and good sportsmanship.
Using sport is twofold – first is using sport to unlock opportunities for people to live their dreams and potentially become a professional athlete. The other is using the power of an athlete mindset to succeed in business.
What is true for sport, is true for business. Therefore, I believe that, through sport, we have the power to change lives.
And I work every day to inspire and enable people to harness the power of sport in their lives.
