A lot of people often wonder why their businesses are not working or why businesses nowadays have a shorter life span compared to numerous others that were formed 100 years ago but still in existence today and are powerhouses in their industries.
It all goes back to one thing, which is making sure that you have a stronger foundation when starting your business. This is where you will see how sports or having a mind of an athlete relates to being a business athlete.
There are plenty of examples that one can use to bring that notion to life.
Belgium did very well in the World Cup last year, making it to the semi-finals, a lot of people wondered what their secret is and I am not in any way downplaying the coaches hard work. However, Belgium has a very dedicated team of development coaches who collaborate with schools to groom upcoming football players in their country.
The Anderletcht Academy in Brussels is one development project that produced eight of the 23 players that represented Belgium in the 2018 Russia World Cup namely; Romelu Lukaku, Vincent Kompany, Leander Dendoncker, Youri Tielemans, Dries Mertens, Adnan Januzaj, Michy Batshuayi and Marouane Fellaini.
Romelu Lukaku is one player who has had it tough in the premier league with doubts hanging over his head because of his age, which is the same thing that happens to most start-up businesses. People might doubt your product, sometimes due to experience and that is where perseverance comes in.
Lukaku’s loan from Chelsea to West Bromwich Albion and then to Everton saw improvement in his game, scoring in almost every match which earned him a well-priced permanent move to Everton.
One thing we can learn from Lukaku is ‘perseverance.’ If you ignore distractions and focus on growing, you will end up winning over well-paying clients who will help grow your business.
I, myself haven’t had a great start to the new year.
I’ve decided to not let motivation drive me to get my work done, I now focus on my dedication. If I have hopes to become one of the best sports Journalists in the world then I can’t rely simply on motivation.
Motivation doesn’t pay the bills, because you are only motivated for a few days if not hours. Dedication will have you waking up in the early hours of the morning and finishing up your work and delivering to the client on time. This is what most athletes do. They’re not always motivated to go to training on a hot day but they know in order to make it to the starting line up, they have to work hard in training.
Furthermore; I have started a foundation called Nozibusiso Sibiya Foundation, which I hope to give back to rural schools through donating soccer kits to their pupils, mostly those who aspire to make a living out of the beautiful game.
I remember interviewing Bafana Bafana legend, Stanton Fredericks at the Investec Soccer school’s tournament and he said what he learnt from playing football as a child was that it teaches you a lot about life principles as well as leadership and discipline.
Learning to make it to training on time as a 6-year-old, will produce an adult who will be punctual to business meetings. Working with a team from a very young age will also make it easy for you as an entrepreneur to be able to lead people.
My aim with my foundation is raising a generation that will be our future leaders on and off the field.
