3 Tips to take on 2019 with a winning attitude

As a new year breaks you may find yourself reflecting on who you are and where you want to be. In my opinion, this is great because self-reflection is a crucial component to a prosperous and fulfilled life.

Approach 2019 with the right attitude, and you will smash it – no doubt!

In fact, it was Zig Ziglar who famously said:

it’s your attitude, more than your aptitude, that will determine your altitude

So… how can we sculpt a better way of thinking, in the process setting you up for a winning year?

To this end, I offer 3 tips to take on 2019 with a winning attitude and thrive.

1. Take care of you body and mind

Your greatest assets in this life are your body and mind.

As it turns out, taking care of these assets serves as the foundation for a winning attitude.

Nurturing our bodies and minds can be done by exercise, healthy eating, meditation, and mental stimulation.

In particular, the benefits of exercise and meditation are well documented. Among these benefits relevant to a winning attitude, you’ll find it helps improving your mental health and mood, helps to sharpen your mind’s thinking and learning processes, and improves sleep patterns.

Remember that life is lived from the inside out. So if you feel the urge to adhere to New Year stereotypes like joining the gym, eating healthier, or reading more books; you’re on the right track.

2. Don’t think – just do

Time is to fear what oxygen is to fire – fuel!

This year a winning attitude can be achieved by simply doing. Don’t allow yourself to think yourself out of your business, your goals and your aspirations.

Time, also known as procrastination, allows the lizard brain to kick in. The longer you wait the stronger the fears or doubts become.

The solution is to starve yourself of time.

Mel Robbins, author of the 5 Second Rule says it best:

There is a window that exists between the moment you have an instinct to change and your mind killing it. It’s a 5 second window. And it exists for everyone.
If you do not take action on your instinct to change, you will stay stagnant. You will not change.

3. Take extreme ownership

Taking complete responsibility for your life means rejecting the notion that your life is at the mercy of external factors.

You can only control what’s in your circle of influence or realm of control. For everything else you control how you respond. You are only at the mercy of yourself.

In summary

Your winning attitude is a simple decision away. However, I’d caution against underestimating the time and persistence it can take to generate momentum once this decision is made.

You may not feel like you’re winning. You may not see immediate results.

Developing new habits of caring for your body and mind, especially if theses habits are new, will take time. Likewise, developing the habit of immediate action and extreme ownership may fly in the face of your established behaviours, therefore requiring patience and persistence.

The key to your growth in 2019 is delayed gratification.

Try and try again with the view that every step you take, regardless of how staggered those steps may be, are steps forward. Thankfully, these 3 tips provide you with a solid foundation that will produce powerful results as they compound over this year and many more to come.

Here’s to you and your winning attitude.
